DESCRIPTION

Most rural landowners have inherited road networks that are not only major sources of erosion, but also maintenance headaches. This workshop will help you better understand road design and maintenance so that you can: 1) reduce maintenance costs, 2) minimize environmental impacts, and 3) maintain water quality.

In this workshop, Keith Guenther of Wildland Solutions will share his Practical Field Guide to Low Maintenance Roads, which includes the following topics:

  • Rural road design standards
  • Environmental impact of roads
  • Road surfacing, drainage, and stream crossing alternatives
  • Turning a bad road or crossing into a good one
  • When to do it yourself and when to get professional help.

This is a practical, hands-on workshop designed for ranchers and farmers, land managers, and equipment operators. The day will include an afternoon field trip in Lynch Canyon Open Space so that participants can learn first-hand how to evaluate site conditions. Come prepared for a moderate amount of walking outdoors. Lunch will be provided for you, but please bring drinks for the field.
