For Teachers

carcinus crab Our goal is to help you bring science to life for your students through the use of real research and data collected in your neighborhood estuary.

Coastal Oceanography Day

Once in the Fall and once in the Spring, we partner with San Francisco State University's Romberg Tiburon Center to offer one-day professional development workshops for educators. The typical agenda includes four, 30 minute lectures by SFSU scientists about their cutting edge marine research, several presentations of hands-on activities related to the research that you can use in your classroom, and a field experience onboard a research vessel. Check back in August and/or February for this year's dates, or contact the Education Coordinator at 415-338-3707.

Data in the Classroom

We are currently developing curriculum that uses scientific data collected within the San Francisco Bay, and in other estuaries throughout the nation, to teach science in middle and high school classes. These lessons will be closely tied to the state and national education standards and will promote inquiry- based learning. Contact our Education Coordinator at 415-338-3707 if you would like to participate in the field testing of products, or would like more information.

Estuary Live!

NOAA's National Estuarine Research Reserve System and EPA's National Estuary Project jointly sponsor virtual field trips to estuaries around the country. San Francisco Bay NERR hosted a one-hour segment of the program in 2005. You can watch the archived field trip, and find out about this year's field trips, at www.estuaries.gov.

Curriculum

NOAA's National Ocean Service offers "Discovery Kits" with free standards-based curriculum for classroom teachers, including lesson plans, activities, and visualizations about estuaries.
