DESCRIPTION
UC Davis, CICEET, UC Center for Water Resources, and the SF Bay National Estuarine Research Reserve (SFNERR) would like to invite you to a workshop where we will demonstrate new tools being developed to predict and model the sources, fate, and transport of fecal pollutants in bay waters. The project, led by UC Davis researchers Dr. Stefan Wuertz and Dr. Fabián Bombardelli, combines microbial source tracking, pathogen analysis, and validated water ultrafiltration technology developed with support from California Department of Transportation (Caltrans) with 3-D modeling of coastal waters San Pablo Bay will be used as a case study. The workshop is relevant to the USEPA’s Critical Science Plan (823-R-08-002) and Criteria Development Plan (823-R-08-003) to update existing recreation water quality criteria.
Who should attend:
This workshop is geared towards coastal water managers, public health officials, water quality engineers, regulators, dischargers, consultants, researchers and others involved in water quality monitoring and regulation.
What to expect:
Attendees will learn about new microbial source identifiers for fecal pollution of beaches and coastal waters, and how to better use limited resources available for water quality monitoring. The research team will present the current project status, respond to feedback given during the last workshop, and lead a hands-on simulation using the modeling tool. Our goal is to foster discussion about the applicability and usability of this project to your work, and to gather feedback about the modeling tool. Attendees will leave this workshop with a deepened understanding of the issues involved in protecting human health in coastal waters of the United States, and how this project could be useful in the context of EPA’s pending update of recreational water quality criteria.
Registration is free and an organic lunch will be provided.
